San Diego New Music presents a program of adventurous chamber music curated by oboist Sarah Skuster
with Rose Lombardo, flute, and Ryan Nestor, percussion

Inspired by the ancient Greek concept that the universe is comprised of four elements--earth, water, fire and air--this program explores how we use these elements to share musical stories and create innovative musical landscapes. We travel from Mario Lavista's Marsias, which uses oboe and water glasses to tell the story of the accomplished, aulos-playing satyr who challenged Apollo to a musical competition, to the abstract and rigorous soundscape of Iannis Xenakis's Dmaathen, for oboe and percussion. Allison Loggins-Hull's Homeland (for solo flute) explores how elemental forces of nature and political tumult complicate our definition of home and Todd Moellenberg's IS (for marimba and tape) is singular 21st century recitative that combines automated voice with live performance to declare, "it is what it is." We are also excited to present a newly commissioned work by SDNM emerging composer, Georgia Phipps, for flute, oboe and electronics.

Mario Lavista - Marsias for oboe and crystal cups
